Hi everyone. The purpose of this thread is a quick link reference to any player that has never heard of this meme, or a player that knows what is it but needs some clarification on it.
Without further ado, I present to you all:
Gog!!!
On May 5th, 2018, a Gyazo screenshot was posted in the 1v1 room Discord channel, showing the S rank of the Gen7 USUM 1v1 viability rankings. However, this screenshot had an unusual twist to it:

The image was also posted in the 1v1 room during the same day. The players there cracked a few sarcastic jokes, and it was a funny joke showing that Staravia was just as viable as Mega Gyarados. RunWithTheScizors (that's me lol) decided to say "Staravia is god!" but made a small typo, "Gog" instead of "God." The phrase got tons of unnecessary but hilarious attention, when people started to make puns and jokes with the word.
VG Jungle shared with us a legendary set which is the core of these teams today, and once we found out that it killed stuff like Alolan Ninetales and Lopunny, nobody could sit still anymore. I'm gonna post the set here:
Gog (Staravia) (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Reckless
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Double-Edge / Fury Attack
- U-turn
- Steel Wing
For a while that night, we created pokepastes with Gog and other unconventional/arbitrary memes, which got the chat hype when one of the memes won a battle. The term "Gogmons" was coined to represent these weird sets. Here are the 8 I made:
Bog, Choice Band Beheeyem with Steel Wing
Blog, Choice Specs Bonsly
#Swadgoals, Choice Band Swadloon
Rog, Choice Specs Rhyhorn
WeepinBelt, Choice Band Weepinbell
Cog, Choice Specs Conkeldurr
Swab, Choice Band Blissey
Googoog, Choice Band Girafarig
The meme continued into the next day (May 6th) and the Z-Crystal in the room intro was temporarily replaced with Staravia for a few hours. Pokepastes and stuff were still going around, until the hype was sadly shut down. A decent bunch of people liked the meme, most didn't mind it, but a medium sized audience did NOT like it. Some of the room staff (I forget/don't wanna point fingers) threatened the "Gogsquad" with warnings, hour long mutes, and even room bans. The room intro sprite was replaced with a Gengar, and then a few days later Deg banned the word "Gog," but there are still infinite ways to bypass.
The meme is usually mentioned once in awhile now and only for a little bit. There were actually some times, during the "dark hours" in the 1v1 room (midnight on) when some of the Gog fans got together and laddered with meme teams. One night there was no staff at all, and VG Jungle and I laddered with memes and I rallied some players for a party. Some users even gave me sets in PM's or "underground."
A very common criticism of the meme is, why not use Staraptor (It can beat a ton more stuff)? The reason is to agree with the meme's origin (the screenshot) and the other is "real men use Staravia." Speaking of this evolutionary line, people who were part of this will never see Staravia normally again.
In terms of the meme, well, as of today, June 3rd, the fire that represents the meme's lifespan is still burning, but it is very small. However, "adding firewood" may be a bit of a risk, because I don't know if the 1v1 room "regulars" want it around. It's almost a month old anyway.
Thanks for hearing my story, and have a good day.
Edit (31 December 2018): Gog was voted “best 1v1 meme of the year” in the end in year poll! I’m overwhelmed and amazed that our small joke actually evolved into something bigger. Thank you guys!
