So this is my 100th post, and instead of it being something super boring like a classic thread or something, I’m gonna write down the tales of an event that paved the way to this forum’s existence; The World Cup of 1v1, a completely discord pokemon tournament I hosted, managed a team and played in.
So for those that don’t know, the World Cup of Pokemon is a pokemon tournament on Smogon where 16 teams from regions all across the world come together to win a 16 by 16 pixel trophy. This is inspired by some soccer tournament or something stupid that I don’t care about.
So, where did the idea of a World Cup of 1v1 come from? Well, I was thinking one day that 1v1 really didn’t have enough tournaments. I initially thought of the 1v1 Premier League, a rip off of the Smogon Premier League, another smogon tournament where sweaty dudes compete for pixels, but where players are bought and region is irrelevant. I believe I put something about it in the 1v1 chat but nobody really cared. Another day, in late May, I was thinking about 1v1 and tournaments, when I thought of the World Cup of 1v1. This would be easier to organize and admittedly one of the first things I thought of was that US west with Uselesscrab, Kentari, and ryyjyywyy (who actually lived in central >_>) would be great. So I thought about it a bit more and made a discord for it.
So it begins. A lot of people joined in the first few days. I made a channel in the discord to have users post where they live for convenience sake. Eventually, six teams emerged. Asia, Canada + Oceania (Weird combo, I know), Europe, US Central, US East and US West. The netherlands briefly had a stint as its own team, but got grouped back with europe eventually because of a lack of 7 players, which was the requirement.
After this, I made a poll to see the demand for BW. After a week, the people had spoken and BW would not be included.
After some memes, we’d ironed out an eligibility policy.
Captains were eventually picked by the tournament hosts (who were Gross Sweep, Kris and I). They were:
Asia: RNGisCancer & Whaleeeee
Canada-Oceania: Dogknees & GL Volkner
Europe: Kris and UnleashOurPassion (Note: UOP eventually replaced himself with thimo due to irl circumstances)
US Central: Gross Sweep & MaceMaster
UC East: Ango & Glyx
US West: Handsome user partys & Uselesscrab
Here's the spreadsheet for the tour, by the way.
After that it was all about getting players on teams. Although US Central had a lot of players flow in initially, it struggled to get a team of 7 active and committed players together while teams like US East had too many players and had to cut a lot of them. Canada-Oceania struggled to get players the whole way through, and none of them were big name players either.
After some time, the captains got their teams together. They were:
Asia: SM - Silvers, Blastblaze, & charizard888 | ORAS - Emperor & Whaleeeee | Subs - LMNI & Noisy
Canada - Oceania: SM: Anony270, Dogknees & Minnow | ORAS: Freddy Kyogre & OM Room | Subs: Always & GL Volkner
Europe: SM - Iron Crusher, Tzums & XSTATIC COLD | ORAS - Lautreamont & Rumplestiltskin | Subs - Thimo & UnleashOurPassion
US Central: SM - Gross Sweep, Landon 21 & Whammerist | ORAS - MaceMaster & ryyjyywyy Subs: Chrispy Burns & Ghetsis
US East: SM - DurzaOffTopic, pokemonvortex & Quantum Tesseract | ORAS - Ango & Sirduckle | Subs - Illusio & Jrm115
US We$t: SM - Elo Bandit, Jaspose & Kentari | ORAS - partys & uselesscrab | Subs - BattleDragon, ptoad
To get a breakdown of the general opinion on these teams before the tournament started, read the Week 1 power rankings.
Before we knew it, Week 1 was up.
Week 1
In the first hour or so, West had already lost to Asia, as Elo Bandit, Uselesscrab and I got too anxious to play and we all lost. From there, people just ended up getting their games done. The Europe team closely beat team US Central in a 3-2 series with many unproven players. Team Canada-Oceania disappointingly lost vs Team US East with East grabbing 3 wins and a loss and having another game come down to activity.
Highlight games:
SM: Landon vs XSTATIC COLD [G1, G2, G3]
The up and coming Landon went up against European 1v1 Veteran XSTATIC COLD in an interesting series.
ORAS: MaceMaster vs Lautreamont [G1, G2]
Newish (I think) 1v1 player macemaster at the time went up against the enigmatic user Lautreamont in a cool series with very interesting teams.
In the beginning of the week, some users and I cooked up some power rankings. The funny thing about it was that US West was first in the power rankings happened to lose the week to the #2 team an hour after the rankings were released. Europe started off proving itself as not a #4 team by winning their first week.
Week 2
In the start, things started looking good for US West. Both Kentari and I grabbed wins early on, and from there all West had to do was just win 1 more series out of 3. In other series, Europe ended up crushing Canada-Oceania, a team that could have gained a lot of morale by winning the series. The at the time #1 ranked team, Asia, ended up surprisingly losing to US East. Back to west, we were just unable to get another dub. I was a bit disappointed as I felt I did all I could, but every team has their ups and downs. Overall interesting week.
Highlight matches
SM: LMNI vs Quantum Tesseract [G1, G2]
Fun series with an interesting chat.
SM: Elo Bandit vs Whammerist [G1, G2, G3]
This series decided the outcome of the West vs Central matchup. Interesting teams and Pokemon matchups makes this series worth watching.
Week 3
Asia, the #3 ranked team at the time kicked off the week by getting an advantage an advantage over the 2-0 Europe. (https://i.imgur.com/3AmyI0x.png) In general this week was pretty lopsided. As Team US West 4-1ed team the #1 ranked Team US East and Team Asia 4-1ed #2 Ranked Team Europe. While there was a bit of shakeup with those 2 matchups, unfortunately Team Canada-Oceania stayed behind as they were 1 game short of turning their winless record around.
Highlight Matches
SM: dogknees vs MaceMaster [G1, G2, G3]
This was the final and most important set of matches of the Canada-Oceania matchup, and it’s a good series as well.
ORAS: Ango vs Jasprose [G1, G2]
Good team choices and picks on Jasprose’s part allow him to easily beat Ango.
Week 4
All of the team matchups of Week 4 were close, as no team won more than 3, the minimum, sets. Again, Team Canada-Oceania was just 1 win short of winning the week. This seems to be a common theme with them, as they’re 1 step behind their opponent every week. Team US Central continued winning by beating Team Asia and US West and Team US West did something similar. Team Europe bounced back from their loss from the previous week.
Highlight Matches
SM: Landon vs Silvers [G1, G2]
Hotshot Landon throttles veteran Silvers in 2 interesting games.
SM: jrm vs UOP [G1, G2, G3]
This close series basically encompasses the US East vs Europe matchup.
Week 5
HNNNNNNNNNNG
This week was super important, as it was the final week before the #2 and #3 seed went into playoffs, with the winner of that going on to fight the #1 team. Teams Europe and US Central were the #1 and #2 seeds with advantages, but things could go wrong if they fluked in the final week (like the Tsareenas in 1v1PL Week 5, smh). Team Asia cemented themselves in the playoffs by beating the worst seeded team, Canada-Oceania. The tied teams US West and US East couldn’t get enough wins to squeeze themselves into playoffs, while the high seeded US Central and Europe won enough. Europe became the #1 seed after crushing US West, while US Central similarly beat US West to get into the playoffs semifinals.
Highlight Matches
ORAS: Lautreamont vs partys [G1, G2, G3, G3.5]
This series sums up Europe vs US West pretty well, although the entire team matchups weren’t as close as this series.
SM: CLAscience vs Silvers [G1, G2, G3]
This matchup was super important for Team Asia, as at this point it was 2-2 for them and if they won this game, they would get into playoffs. Good series, too.
SEMIFINALS
So, Semis were up. Emperor got the first blood by defeating stall lord ryyjyywyy [G1, G2, G3]. Whaleeee followed that up by beating Gross Sweep, admittedly with a bit of luck [G1, G2, G3]. Macemaster helped US Central put up a fight by defeating silvers (Games linked below). Finally, charizard8888 sealed the deal by defeating the previously 5-0 Landon [G1, G2].
Highlight matches
SM: MaceMaster vs Silvers [G1, G2]
Two good players find each other fighting in finals, but Mace’s creative sets get him far.
FUH-FUH-FUH-FINALS
Emperor started off getting first blood in ORAS vs the previously undefeated Lautreamont [G1, G2]. Asia was up, they only needed 2 more series. Next, Iron Crusher came back and won a series for Europe with interesting pokemon choices on both sides [G1, G2]. UOP put europe in an advantageous position by winning in 2 vs charizard numbers [G1, G2]. Silvers brought it back again [G1, G2, G3], tieing the score up, and leaving 1 more game to determine the winner. Look below.
Highlight Matches:
SM: LMNI vs Tzums [G1, G2, G3]
Highlight because this series decided who got the stolen trophy that didn't exist at the time. Try not to have a heart attack at the end of G3.
For the last series on the finals, UOP appparently misclicked at one point etc etc etc etc idk. Not my team that got robbed though so I don't rly care c:
Because I feel like it, I'm gonna break down my perspective of each team after all of this:
Asia: Solid as fuck. Couldn't grab the dub but had the raw talent to.
Canada-Oceania: Honestly, not that bad. This group barely lost every week, and if they were just a bit more consistent they could've had a way better run. A bit behind everyone else in terms of raw talent, but they weren't as bad as people said in my opinion. Shame you guys gave up so quick u_u.
Europe: A bunch of unproven dudes came together and showed how good they were. Super impressed by them, how any team with unknown players wishes to go.
US Central - Similar to Europe, but I knew GS and ryyjyywyy before the tour.
US East - Solid team. Had talent but like durza was quesitionable xd.
US West - GANG GANG GANG. Loved these dudes. UC had a pretty poor run and that + never seeing my 1 active sub play 1v1 before kinda dragged us down a bit.
Final note:
I fucking loved this tour and the experience of it. So much talent, and people cared about this tour a lot. There were 3 activity calls in the whole tour. In the later weeks of 1v1PL, there were like 3 activity calls per team vs team. Hope you all had a good time reading this. See you all in the next World Cup, hope it can be better than the last, especially without my hosting.
S/O Dolla$ign & West.
