This is the revised version of “The Origin and Story of the Staravia Meme” written by RunWithTheScizors (me!).
The purpose of this post is to explain the Staravia meme through a link which you can post in the 1v1 room on Pokemonshowdown! when someone asks “what is Gog.”
On May 5, 2018, a Gyazo screenshot taken by Pokesartoolcay was posted in the 1v1 Discord channel. This was a screenshot of the Gen7 USUM 1v1 viability rankings’ S tier. However, something was different about it…
Everybody made sarcastic jokes about the bird and how it rivaled the power and versatility of Mega Gyarados. The moment after that, everything changed; I made a typo when trying to say “Staravia is God,” which came out as “Gog.” This small typo would eventually chain into more weird phrases and jokes that would flood the chat.
Things started to get real good when VG Jungle shared with us the set that we would use with the Gog phrase. The players became motivated to create and use more of these types of sets, a.k.a. “Gogmons,” after the bird consistently slayed Mega Lopunny. We would collect more meme sets over the months and I will share those with you:

The next day, the meme was still active. It became so popular that the Z Crystal image in the room intro was replaced by the Staravia sprite. What started out as a small typo would eventually turn into an entire cult of supporters that went out of their way to "spread their wings." It started to get out of hand and this was evident when staff began to threaten the “Gogsquad” with warnings, mutes that lasted for an hour, and to everyone’s shock, room bans. DEG replaced the bird sprite with a Gengar and a couple days later, Gog was banworded.
After that action, it became slightly more difficult to convey our love for Gog, though there were ways to bypass the banword; we could just use “g0g,” and Dom would later bypass the detection by using an o from a different alphabet.
The meme began to fade for the rest of the month, but it would come up once in a while. Late at night, I would sometimes hold secret “Gog parties” when no staff were on. During that time, some players would even pass sets for Gogmons “underground” (PMs).
Things began to lighten up over August, which was part of a time when I was inactive until September. The word “Gog” was unbanworded by (I think it was) UselessCrab. Now players could freely use the word in chat and speak in the chat with the word “Gog” in their username.
The Church of Gog Discord channel opened for the players with VG Jungle as the Cult Leader. I am thinking of posting a link here but I will look for rules and permissions first to make sure it is okay.
Months later, special parties called “Gog-raids” began to emerge. Players would pull up Pokemonshowdown! on multiple tabs and they would name the alts “1 Gog / 2 Gog / 3 Gog / …” The 1v1 room was flooded with Gog alts in the user list to the point that ¼ of the users had “Gog” in their name. There was also an amazing Library room raid, when the player count went from 37 to roughly 80!
Then comes the end of year poll for 1v1. Players could vote on categories like favorite mod / driver / etc. On December 31, 2018, Gog was declared the “best meme of the year in 1v1” by vote.
After a year, Gog is still a relatively active meme despite some players calling it dead. It is known as a famous joke in the community and the tier and has received representation as well, such as Elo Bandit's YouTube video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ChctFhv0XY
Now, I have a request not just for the supporters but also for the players reading this. Due to spam, the word "boomer" has been banworded on PS, at least for many chatrooms. I humbly ask you to say "OK gog" in place of that meme.
Well, that is it for now. Rather than edit the old thread I made a new thread to track popularity by views and to better organize my ideas. I will update this thread if there is a new and significant event to add to the story. If you notice any errors or if you want something added, please let me know. I am thinking about creating the "principles of gog" with help from the church discord sometime in the future, so stay tuned for that!
Thank you for reading, and have a good day.
